The Frame
I imagined that the piece would need to have depth and light (since it is a chandelier!). I decided to start with a copper frame. I wanted the frame itself to be a statement, but not overwhelming. I chose copper because I wanted to be able to either paint (powder coat) or use various patina colors. I also had to figure out how to hang it, so I included in the design 2 methods; either like a ceiling fan or suspended by cable wire. I have the frames manufactured in Oahu made to order based on my customer’s needs. I decided to have 3 rings for hanging the glass or fish from. This gives depth to the piece.
Lighting
This was the more difficult part of the design for me. The lighting needs to be URL certified. I decided to purchase products that are already certified (e.g. LED strips and drivers, or light bulbs) and suspend them from the frame using a plexiglass tube for diffusing the light.
Styles
I provide two options; carved wooden fish or “tumbled” glass.
Shoal of Fish:
Using wooden carved fish handmade in Bali, the fish are whitewashed, sandpapered to give it a weathered look and then have a light coating of wax applied.
Tumbled Glass:
Tumbled glass is the man-made equivalent of beach glass. That is, beach glass is the refuse from the past that is thrown onto a beach, where the waves, sand, and rocks tumble bottles until the edges are smoothed and the glass is opaque. Tumbled glass is made by tumbling the broken bottles in large containers for days with a mix of sand, rocks, and water. The tumbled glass pieces are then wrapped in wire that gives more interesting depth and allows me to connect each piece into strands. Both styles of chandeliers are customizable.
Frame Styles
Shapes
The frame can be round and different sizes and shapes. I have currently created 1’ and 2’ round frames. I could make not only traditional round frames but can also design oval shapes for kitchen peninsulas or dining room tables as well as tiering for stairwells or exceptionally high ceilings.
Color
There are different patina colors available such as blue, green, browns, reds, that can create something to fit your home style. I can also have the frame powder coated with a variety of colors as well as just burnish the copper and wax it to maintain the bright original copper color.
